An interesting trend taking place in high-tech porn is for VR studios to launch a 2D version of their VR site, which they then market as POV (point-of-view) porn. The VirtualRealPorn studio, who are also behind the top (and only active) gay VR site VirtualRealGay, recently launched POV Gay, featuring 2D versions of their 3D VR videos. They aren’t the first to do this either, as Teen Mega World VR (TMWVR.net) had already launched a 2D version (TMW POV).
Given that VR cameras are simply two 2D lenses in one camera (left and right), it’s somewhat surprising that the top studios weren’t offering 2D versions in addition to their main VR site. It certainly makes financial sense for them, especially at a time when the VR porn market has been plateauing for some time.
Advantages of a 2D “POV” site alongside their VR site include:
- Opens up a much wider market – the general porn viewer who doesn’t own a VR headset.
- Exisiting members might enjoy occasionally masturbating to their favorite VR scenes in 2D without a bulky headset.
- Smart glasses, or AR glasses, can increasingly render 2D content into 3D, meaning POV scenes are great for viewing on them. Smart glasses are now selling much faster than VR porn headsets.
- POV porn is a niche growing in popularity.
- The POV sites can be gateways to their VR sites – members hooked on the POV content my decide to purchase a VR headset to experience the scenes in VR.
- It involves very little extra cost for the VR studio as it is already filmed content.
It will be interesting to see if VirtualReal go on to make a 2D POV version of their trans site VirtualRealTrans, or even their main VR site VirtualRealPorn. Also, whether other VR studios will indeed follow suit.
